This book is a narrative-based ethics text designed to help students and practitioners engage deeply with the complex ethical dilemmas encountered across contemporary social work settings. It presents fully developed short stories-organized around themes of child welfare, mental health practice, substance use treatment, school social work, and supervision of new practitioners-that place readers inside ethically ambiguous situations shaped by poverty, trauma, systemic inequities, organizational pressures, and relational dynamics. Each narrative is followed by guided discussion questions to support reflective dialogue, ethical reasoning, and application of professional values in classroom, supervision, and field education contexts. The book responds to a growing need in social work education to move beyond rule-based ethics instruction toward applied, reflective learning. While professional codes and decision-making models remain essential, practitioners often encounter dilemmas that unfold under time pressure, emotional stress, and institutional constraints. Ethical challenges today are further shaped by evolving practice realities, including digital communication boundaries, harm reduction approaches, gender identity considerations in schools, practitioner burnout, and organizational accountability. By presenting ethics through lived experience rather than abstract scenarios, the book aligns with current pedagogical trends emphasizing experiential learning, cultural humility, and structural awareness. Ethical Encounters in Social Work Practice is intended primarily for BSW and MSW students and instructors in ethics, practice, and field seminar courses, though it also serves as a valuable resource for supervisors and early-career practitioners. Instructors will find the narrative format highly effective for stimulating discussion and connecting theory to practice, while students benefit from engaging, realistic scenarios that reflect situations they encounter in field placements. By fostering ethical reflection, professional self-awareness, and critical thinking, this book will prepare emerging social workers to navigate the uncertainty and responsibility inherent in professional practice. How does trade diplomacy function when relationships are built not only on interests, but on identity? Türkiye's economic engagement with the post Soviet Turkic states is often described as a natural extension of history, culture, and shared identity-but how, exactly, does this translate into concrete diplomatic practice? This book offers a comparative analysis of Türkiye's trade diplomacy with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, examining how bilateral mechanisms such as Joint Economic Commissions (JECs), business councils and forums, and Preferential Trade Agreements operate not only to promote trade, but also to structure and sustain foreign policy relationships. Challenging explanations that reduce trade diplomacy to either realist influence-seeking or liberal welfare maximization, the book argues that Türkiye's approach in the Turkic world is best understood through social constructivism: trade diplomacy becomes a vehicle for institutionalizing a "brotherhood" discourse and building durable cooperation even when immediate economic gains are limited or constrained. Drawing on trade data alongside systematic legal-text analysis-including Joint Economic Commission protocols, investment protection agreements, and preferential trade instruments, the study shows how trade diplomacy serves as a durable foreign policy infrastructure. It explains why mechanisms such as JECs and preferential agreements often matter as political signals, agenda-setting tools, and relationship-maintenance devices, not merely as trade liberalization measures. Inhaltsverzeichnis CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION.- CHAPTER 2: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR TRADE DIPLOMACY.- CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH DESIGN AND SOURCES.- CHAPTER 4: TÜRKIYE S TRADE WITH TURKIC STATES.- CHAPTER 5: TÜRKIYE S TRADE DIPLOMACY MECHANISMS WITH AZERBAIJAN.- CHAPTER 6: TÜRKIYE S TRADE DIPLOMACY MECHANISMS WITH KAZAKHSTAN.- CHAPTER 7: TÜRKIYE S TRADE DIPLOMACY MECHANISMS WITH UZBEKISTAN.- CHAPTER 8: COMPARATIVE FINDINGS AND SCOPE CONDITIONS.- CHAPTER 9: CONCLUSION. Inhaltsverzeichnis 1892-1918: Der Beginn.- 1918-1921: Wehrlogenarbeit.- 1921-1928: Politische Aktivitäten.- 1928-1933: Krisenzeit.- 1933-1945: Das Verbot.- 1945-1950: Der Neubeginn.- 1950-1957: Der Ausbau.- 1957-1964: Die Fortführung.- 1964-1974: Die Veränderung.- 1974-1978: Aktionen, Demos, Partys.- 1978-1983: Seminare, Camps, Proteste.- 1983-2010: Wechselvolle Jahre.- Nachwort.- Index.
This book examines the obligation of data protection by design and provides practical guidance on complying with Article 25 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR significantly reshaped EU data protection law and introduced, for the first time, a legal requirement that data controllers implement technical and organisational measures to embed data protection principles into the design and operation of digital systems. While related concepts such as Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) predated the GDPR, Article 25 established a binding obligation to ensure data protection by design and by default. The book analyses the requirements of Article 25 GDPR and explains how organisations can comply with this broadly framed provision. Particular attention is given to the risk-based approach adopted by the GDPR, under which the level of protection must correspond to the risks posed to data subjects. This approach creates uncertainty because Article 25 does not specify which safeguards are sufficient in practice. Similar ambiguity exists regarding anonymisation techniques, which the author identifies as important measures for achieving compliance with the principle of data minimisation. To address these challenges, the book examines officially approved Codes of Conduct and certification requirements in data protection law. These instruments provide detailed guidance on implementing data protection by design and help translate the GDPR's abstract requirements into concrete compliance measures. The analysis further demonstrates that the EU law principle of legitimate expectations can protect organisations that rely on officially approved standards. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the book also explores Knowledge Graphs (KGs) as tools for embedding data protection requirements into technological systems. Focusing on Knowledge Graphs developed through Semantic Web technologies, it shows how legal rules can be expressed in machine-readable formats that support compliance by design. The monograph concludes by proposing best practices for the development of vocabularies and ontologies that represent data protection obligations in a structured, machine-readable way.

This book offers a Foucauldian analysis of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, using the UN Security Council's P/CVE agenda to illustrate how security operates within liberal modernity. Bringing Foucauldian, feminist, and decolonial thought into dialogue, it advances a perspective on the power relations through which security governs society, produces subjects, and organizes political possibilities. The book traces the emergence of P/CVE and shows how it embodies the anticipatory and governmental rationalities of liberal security, while rearticulating the intersecting hierarchies through which modernity orders social and political life. It examines how these processes govern subjects, populations, and political orders across lines of race, gender, religion, class, and geopolitical differences, among others, reproducing the hierarchical structures of liberal modernity. The book is a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners seeking to understand responses to violent extremism, but also the ways in which security governs society and structures power relations in contemporary politics.
This book is the first comprehensive collection to address victimhood through the lens of mediatised politics and culture. Across different countries and contexts, it explores how media and mediated communication shape public awareness, affects, and emotions in debates about victimhood, and how victimhood is claimed and wielded in discourse to communicate political demands. Questions of who deserves empathy, visibility, support and redress have become defining issues of this moment. Amid the rise of identity politics, the rhetoric of suffering and pain has become omnipresent across mass media, platforms and websites, driving competing identity formation around genuine and perceived victimhood. The seventeen chapters examine how victimhood identities are (re)produced in a European context through news, alternative media, online communities and immersive media by journalists, activists, politicians, far-right movements and victims themselves. They show how victimhood is used to define the good and the bad in polarised societies, often setting those who suffer against one another rather than bridging social divides. Offering original conceptual and empirical insights, this timely volume makes an important contribution to contemporary academic and public debates, helping readers navigate the evolving role of victimhood in mediatised politics and culture. This volume highlights recent advances in the recognition, investigation, and prevention of child abuse deaths, integrating perspectives from forensic medicine, public health, social work, and law. Drawing on the latest research and multidisciplinary case analyses, it examines how improved data collection and interagency collaboration have deepened understanding of fatal maltreatment patterns, mechanisms of death, and systemic failures that contribute to missed opportunities for prevention. The chapters provide comprehensive coverage of evolving methodologies in fatality review, diagnostic innovations in medical and forensic investigation, and evidence-based prevention strategies implemented across jurisdictions. By emphasizing cross-system communication and accountability, it guides professionals in developing more cohesive responses to child fatalities. Intended for clinicians, researchers, legal professionals, child death review members and policymakers, this volume serves as both a scholarly resource and a practical guide to reducing child deaths through improved recognition, coordinated action, and policy reform. Ultimately, it challenges all disciplines to move beyond identification toward prevention, ensuring that lessons learned from each child's death drive systemic change and protect future generations. This volume focuses on practical strategies to address the problem of homelessness in the USA and globally. It takes a clinical sociology perspective to analyze ways to help communities develop humane social policies and practices to prevent homelessness in the first place and design strategies to handle encampments with unsheltered homeless people. It addresses a major gap in the literature that has so far quantified the number of unsheltered people or discussed their etiology and the consequences of homelessness. It critiques the official data on homelessness in the USA for not taking into account the numerous housing distressed populations. The volume includes chapters from esteemed experts who share their views about positive strategies that communities could use to prevent homelessness. It shares best practices that government leaders, policymakers, organizational administrators, researchers, practitioners, and advocates can use that have produced positive results. Promoting a human rights approach, this volume explores ways that clinical sociology has contributed to increasing the health and well-being of both individuals and communities. This is an important read for researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers working on or with homeless populations. This book introduces an operational framework for blockchain implementation in mineral supply chains, which offers original theoretical insights into trust-building, sociotechnical integration, and system design under regulatory pressure and uncertainty. The global transition to clean energy and digital technologies depends heavily on critical minerals such as tin, cobalt, and lithium. Yet, many of these resources originate in regions affected by conflict, weak governance, and social inequality. This creates serious ethical and regulatory risks for companies and governments alike. Ensuring transparency and trust across complex international supply chains has therefore become one of the most urgent challenges of our time.

This book examines the use of behavioural economics to address policy issues in Central and Eastern Europe. Drawing on case studies from different countries across the region and policy areas including housing, transportation, and healthcare the book assesses how insights from behavioural economics have been utilised in the public sector to inform public policy. In doing so, it throws important light on the unique challenges for policy design, implementation and service delivery in Central and Eastern Europe, especially with regard to migration, urbanisation, ageing populations, and regional inequalities. By focusing on an underexplored region, it also extends and challenges existing knowledge on behavioural public policy more generally.
Over recent times, much media scholarship has been concerned with the ever-deeper incursion of media and its associated logics into both macro-processes of social change and micro-practices of everyday life. For media audience researchers, this situation has given rise to the dual challenge of arguing the field's enduring relevance and adapting its conceptual tools to contexts of pervasive digital media. This book aims to respond to these challenges by furnishing media audience studies with fresh intellectual resources and an alternative philosophical footing. Drawing inspiration from the late pragmatism of John Dewey, new materialist scholarship and wider anti-dualistic, relational and ecological thought, When Media Matter proposes a novel approach to studying the activities of media audiences and users, one centred on understanding media engagements as constituted by dynamic, processual relations. As a radical re-visioning of existing approaches in the field, the process-relational prospectus undoubtedly raises a series of questions and brings new challenges at the levels of both theory and research practice. Over its course, this book tackles these with the aid of resources and ideas from fields ranging from sociology, psychology and anthropology to the cognitive sciences and quantum physics.

As generative artificial intelligence transforms how problems are explored, opportunities are formulated, business models are developed, assumptions are tested, and projects are communicated, entrepreneurs and innovation teams face both an extraordinary opportunity and a new risk: AI can accelerate entrepreneurial work without necessarily producing better entrepreneurial projects. This book shifts attention from isolated AI outputs to the cumulative design of entrepreneurial projects. Grounded in Design-Based Entrepreneurship (DBE) and Representational Interaction Architecture (RIA), it introduces ToolBoard, a structured design-based methodology and operational system for developing venture projects through explicit questioning, intermediate representations, Human-AI-Human cycles, and iterative validation.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and the associated school closures, explainer videos have seen increasing use in mathematics education. In this book, Lisa Tusche-Naggar examines the quality characteristics of "good" mathematics explainer videos. The aim is to provide a transparent account of the intentions and criteria that come into play in the creation, selection, and reception of these videos. Drawing on interviews and group discussions with various relevant stakeholder groups, the book reconstructs and compares different perspectives on the quality of explainer videos. It highlights both the commonalities and differences in the views of explainer video producers, teachers and students who use explainer videos as a resource in mathematics education, and mathematics education researchers, who provide the theoretical frameworks for reflecting on explainer videos. The book thus offers a multi-perspective view of potential quality criteria for mathematics explainer videos and also presents ideas for how these videos can be effectively integrated into mathematics instruction. This book offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of anomaly detection, tracing its evolution from classical statistical methods to modern machine learning, deep learning, and hybrid AI approaches. Anomaly detection has become one of the most critical capabilities of the digital age. As societies increasingly rely on interconnected infrastructures, artificial intelligence, financial networks, and automated decision systems, small deviations in data can signal major threats, from cyberattacks and financial fraud to infrastructure failures and systemic crises. Yet despite its growing importance, anomaly detection remains fragmented across disciplines and application domains. Moving beyond purely technical perspectives, it demonstrates how anomaly detection functions as an essential component of risk governance, organizational resilience, and societal preparedness. Through a combination of theoretical foundations, practical case studies, and real-world applications, readers will learn how anomalies emerge, why detection systems fail, and how organizations can design more robust strategies for identifying and managing uncertainty. The book covers statistical approaches, adaptive thresholding, supervised and unsupervised learning, fraud detection, representation learning, contrastive learning, and governance-oriented frameworks for high-stakes environments. Bridging the worlds of data science, cybersecurity, risk management, and public policy, this book is an invaluable resource for researchers, graduate students, AI practitioners, risk professionals, and decision-makers seeking to understand and govern complex digital systems. Ultimately, it argues that anomaly detection is no longer merely a technical challenge, but a foundational capability for managing uncertainty and safeguarding modern society.
