Handbook of the Sociology of Mental Health
Handbook of the Sociology of Mental Health

The third edition of this award-winning and highly successful handbook features theory-driven reviews of recent research with a comprehensive approach to the investigation of the ways in which society shapes the mental health of its members and the lives of those who have been diagnosed as having a mental illness. The handbook is distinctive in its focus on how the organization and functioning of society influence the occurrence of mental disorder and its consequences. A core issue that runs throughout the text concerns the differential distribution of mental illness across various social strata, defined by status characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age. The contributions to this volume shed light on the social, cultural, and economic factors that explain why some social groups have an elevated risk of disorder. They also address the social repercussions of mental disorders for individuals, including stigmatization within the larger society, and for their families and social networks. This thoroughly updated edition includes substantial updates to previous chapters, as well several new chapters by established and emerging scholars. These additions emphasize important theoretical developments in the field (e.g., social network theories), focus on vulnerable populations (e.g., children; sexual minorities; individuals with disabilities), and raise critical and timely issues facing local and global communities (e.g., crime, policing, and mental illness; community-based mental health care). The contributing authors share their views on current and potential avenues for sociological approaches to mental health in a concluding "future directions" section of the handbook. Introduction to Water Policy
Introduction to Water Policy

Water is the essence of life and without it no humans, animals, or plants can survive without it. In the modern era, mankind has improperly managed all aspects of natural systems, including the quantity and quality of water on which our lives depend. Water policies are created and used to guide the management and governance of our most precious resources. Therefore, it is very important to create a framework within policy to understand how to approach future issues and make improvements to management of the remaining water resources and to restore those that have been damaged by unacceptable management practices causing overuse and contamination. In this textbook, we have attempted to organize water policy into the various aspects that control it because management and governance are not effective if they are not supported by the people who are impacted by it. Many scientists and engineers believe that technology can be used to develop water policies that should be followed to create an abundance of high- quality water, sufficient for use by the population and nature. However, the technical aspects of water management and governance are only one aspect of water policy. Water policy development and decisions involve a decision tree that could be termed the Water Policy Tetrahedron with four basic components including technical, legal, sociopolitical, and economic aspects. Any single policy or decision is formulated within all four aspects and depending on the complexity, normally it will involve all four parts. Also, management of water resources must consider sustainability and resilience in the process of making water policy decisions. Inhaltsverzeichnis Introduction.- The Water Policy Tetrahedron.- Water Sustainability: Concepts and Principles.- Resilience in Water Policy.- Introduction to Hydrology and the Water Budget. Autorenportrait Thomas M. Missimer, PhD. Dr. Missimer is currently Professor Emeritus at Florida Gulf Coast University and has 54 years of experience in water policy. He was the founder of three consulting corporations before entering academia. He is the author or co-author of 12 technical books and has 165 peer-reviewed papers in the water and geology fields. He actively participates on national committees in the US to help evaluate major water infrastructure development programs. Seneshaw Tsegaye, PhD. Dr. Tsegaye is a professor and the Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University. He specializes on research of the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure, particularly on water systems. He has co-authored many papers with Dr. Missimer with emphasis on building new water systems with sufficient resilience to the challenges of climate change induced conditions.

The Dawn Angiosperms and Plant Evolution
The Dawn Angiosperms and Plant Evolution

This would be the third edition of my monograph on fossil angiosperms. The book focuses on reproductive organs (flowers) of angiosperms. Since fossils are only reliable data source on the history of plants, and flowers are crucial organs used in angiosperm taxonomy, deciphering fossil flowers is undisputedly important in botany. In the previous two editions, enough of pre-Cretaceous angiosperms have been documented, and a theory, the Unifying Theory, has been advanced and proved. Several significant progresses have been made in the past eight years, this makes a newer edition badly needed for students studying botany and plant evolution. Most importantly, new fossil angiosperms discovered in the Permian, which is over 250 million years ago, and recent molecular estimates as well as fossil insect records converge to an origin of angiosperms in a pre-Cretaceous age. These progresses go far beyond the expectation of all botanical textbooks, prompting a new wave of theory innovations in the coming years. Third edition of THE DAWN ANGIOSPERMS will place a foundation for and trigger such innovations. Needless to say, publishing such a monograph will place Springer once again in the center of these science innovations. Inhaltsverzeichnis Chapter 1. Introduction.- Chapter 2. Suggested angiosperm ancestors.- Chapter 3. Angiosperms: characters and criteria.- Chapter 4. Background for the plant fossils.- Chapter 5. Flowers from the Early Cretaceous.- Chapter 6. Pre-Cretaceous Angiosperms.- Chapter 7. Putative plants transient between gymnosperms and angiosperms.- Chapter 8. The Making of flowers and Plant Evolution.- Chapter 9. Researcher at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, CAS since 2004. With over hundred peer-reviewed publications, Xin Wang and his colleagues have confirmed the earliest occurrences of angiosperms in the Early Permian (over hundred million years before widely assumed), unified the evolution of reproductive organs in land plants, raised a ubiquitous evolutionary pattern ODC (offspring development conditioning). Xin Wang pioneered research on plant cytoplasm research. In addition, Xin Wang also works on prime numbers and has brought the chaotic primer numbers in order.

CORE SPICE
CORE SPICE

Safety-critical development projects are expected to move fast and still get everything right: functional safety, cybersecurity, a growing list of standards and regulations, product quality, and tight delivery dates. Most teams struggle with this seemingly conflicting set of project constraints. This book argues that this conflict is solvable, and shows how projects can be organized to meet those constraints. CORE SPICE is a coaching framework for make-to-order development projects, introduced here in book form for the first time. It rests on a small number of principles, a project-centric role model with clear end-to-end ownership, a set of lightweight strategy documents called Approaches that replace the process handbook, and five Effectiveness Accelerators that keep a project moving both fast and safe. CORE SPICE complements Automotive SPICE, ISO 26262 (functional safety), and ISO/SAE 21434 (cybersecurity). It is not a replacement for those standards. Instead, it is a working approach that helps a project meet those expectations while reducing bureaucracy. Drawing on more than two decades of process improvement and turnaround work with automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers in Germany, the United States, Japan, China, and Australia, the author explains how to start a project right at Kickoff, how to choose the traceability approach that best serves the project's needs, how to track progress effectively by features and product quality, and how to recover a project that has already drifted. Two anonymized real-world turnarounds and a chapter on passing the Automotive SPICE assessment show how the framework works under real pressure. The book is written for project leads, technical leads, and senior engineers who are responsible for delivering safety-critical systems, and for the quality, process, and engineering managers who set the conditions they work in. Readers familiar with Automotive SPICE and ISO 26262 will find a practitioner's perspective on making them work. Readers new to the standards will find it accessible and easy to follow. Roman Mildner is the founder of United Mentors GmbH near Cologne, Germany. In more than thirty years of software and systems development, he has worked in nearly every role of the V-model on safety-critical automotive projects up to ASIL D. Since 2004, he has prepared organizations in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia for Automotive SPICE assessments and has recovered distressed projects under production pressure. He originated CORE SPICE. Inhaltsverzeichnis The Speed Imperative.- The Limits of Assessment-Based Process Improvement.- Process Quality, Product Quality, and What Actually Matters.- Lessons Learned from Ackoff s Holistic Perspective.- ECST Effective Critical Systems Thinking, the Foundation of CORE SPICE.- The Basic Structure How CORE SPICE Fits Together.- Between Rigidity and Flexibility The 12 Principles and Common-Sense Practices.- The Role Model People, Accountability, and the Team Capability Coach.- The CORE SPICE Approaches.- The 5 Effectiveness Accelerators.- Traceability Options Choosing the Right Level of Rigor.- CORE SPICE Vertical Integration Development Across Company Boundaries.- Starting Right The CORE SPICE Project Kickoff.- Feature-Based Project Tracking Visibility That Matters.- The Defect Curve Product Quality Visibility from Day One.- Architecture-Centric Development.- Turning Around a Safety-Critical Project Under Time Pressure.- Surviving the ASPICE Assessment.- Move Fast. Build Right. Autorenportrait Roman Mildner is the founder and owner of United Mentors GmbH, a specialist consultancy in Bergisch Gladbach, near Cologne, Germany. With more than thirty years in software and systems development, he has worked across the full V-model-as developer, requirements manager, software architect, test manager, quality manager, and project manager-on safety-critical projects up to ASIL D for leading automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, and in other industries such as telecommunications, life sciences, software vendors, and logistics. Automotive SPICE has been part of his work since 2004, when a first CMMI engagement led him into process improvement. In the two decades since, he has taken organizations from level 0 to capability levels 2 and 3 across the full VDA scope in Germany, Australia, the United States, China, and Japan; prepared their teams for OEM assessments; and guided them through the assessments. He knows the model from both sides: as the consultant who builds the evidence and as the project manager who delivers the product. CORE SPICE grew out of that practitioner's perspective. He has recovered distressed projects under production pressure without compromising safety compliance and continues to support turnaround projects as a project manager and Team Capability Coach. He holds a master's degree in computer science and economics from RWTH Aachen and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Roman Mildner originated CORE SPICE, the coaching framework described in this book. He is a co-author of Car IT Reloaded: Disruption in the Car Industry (Springer, 2025) and author of Car IT kompakt (Springer, 2015). He writes on project delivery and safety-critical development at projectcrunch.com.

Improvement of Processes in Combustion Chambers of Piston Engines Converted to Hydrogen
Improvement of Processes in Combustion Chambers of Piston Engines Converted to Hydrogen

This book is devoted to the improvement of thermophysical processes of hydrogen injection, formation of a hydrogen-air mixture, combustion, flame propagation, and heat exchange with the walls of the combustion chamber occurring in serial diesel and gasoline engines converted to hydrogen. It presents research where "process improvement" refers to organization that would minimize nitrogen oxide emissions and heat losses with the walls and reduce thermal loads on the combustion chamber surfaces and the heat-stressed state of the main parts (piston, cylinder head and liner). Improvement is mainly achieved through the use of optimal values of engine parameters, such as design (combustion chamber shape; hydrogen injector design; intensity of vortex motion generated in the intake channel, etc.) and adjustable (hydrogen-air mixture composition; injection moment, duration and pressure; degree of exhaust gas recirculation, etc.) parameters. These are determined based on the results of numerical and full-scale experiments on the hydrogen engines under study. Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development
Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development

The book "Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development" arises from the acknowledgment of the fact that higher education institutions are uniquely positioned to shape mindsets, drive innovation, and lead societal transformation. Unlike governments or corporations, universities enjoy academic freedom, long-term planning horizons, and a multidisciplinary vantage point that allows them to tackle the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges of our time. Yet this potential remains largely underutilized. Despite countless campus sustainability initiatives, sustainability-focused degree programs, and research centers, many universities still struggle to integrate sustainable development deeply into their core strategies-teaching, research, operations, and community engagement often remain siloed, and institutional inertia, funding shortages, or misaligned incentive systems frequently undermine transformative action. This book emerges from the urgent need to move beyond isolated pilot projects and symbolic commitments toward systemic, institution-wide change. It brings together evidence-based case studies, theoretical frameworks, and practical toolkits from diverse global contexts-ranging from grassroots student-led movements to system-level policy reforms in European research universities. The contributors argue that universities can act as true "change agents" by reimagining curricula to foster sustainability competencies, leveraging their purchasing power and endowments for ethical investments, partnering with local communities for co-created solutions, and reorienting research agendas toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, the book critically examines barriers such as hierarchical governance, resistance to pedagogical innovation, and the tension between academic neutrality and advocacy. Ultimately, it offers a roadmap for university leaders, faculty, students, and policymakers to harness higher education's unique moral authority and intellectual capital-not merely to adapt to a changing world but to actively co-create a just, resilient, and thriving future for all. Field Theory for Point Processes
Field Theory for Point Processes

This monograph develops a field-theoretic framework for the analysis of point processes, treating them as random measures and generalized fields rather than purely combinatorial objects. By treating point processes in terms of empirical fields, generating functionals, and effective actions, it offers a unified analytical approach to their structure, dynamics, and inference. Standard constructions, such as Poisson processes, stochastic dynamics, and inference procedures, are recast as components of a single analytic structure. This makes explicit structural correspondences that are often implicit: between generating functions and entropy, cumulant hierarchies and interaction, convex duality and large deviations, stochastic evolution and functional differential equations, and Fisher information and precision geometry.

Guide to AI for Modern Software Engineering
Guide to AI for Modern Software Engineering

Machines now write a great deal of software. Teams are not shipping better systems, and in some measured cases they are shipping more slowly. This textbook/guide explains why, and what to do about it. Artificial intelligence rarely removes engineering work; it relocates it. When generating code becomes cheap, the constraint moves to reviewing it. When detecting anomalies becomes cheap, the constraint moves to deciding which ones matter. This book follows that pattern across four disciplines usually taught apart - DevOps, DevSecOps, MLOps and AIOps - and treats them as one subject, because engineers work across all four over a single system. Twenty chapters cover intelligent delivery pipelines, security testing and compliance, the model lifecycle, observability and incident response, and predictive capacity and cost. Topics and features: -Grounded throughout in one running example at realistic scale, with worked arithmetic the reader can follow and challenge -Full instructor materials: teaching plans, case studies, assessments with rubrics, slide decks with speaker notes, and figure alt text for accessibility -More than two hundred original figures, each explained element by element rather than left to the reader -A public companion repository of runnable code and end-to-end deliverables -Six appendices: tool comparison, Python examples, regulatory quick reference, maturity checklists, glossary and further reading -Honest about evidence-with each chapter stating its limits, and the closing chapter testing its own forecasts The book is written for postgraduate and final-year undergraduate students on modules in software engineering, DevOps, secure development and machine learning operations. The content also will appeal to software, security, machine learning and site reliability engineers in practice, as well as engineering leaders deciding what to fund (who will find the cost and capacity material directly applicable). It begins by teaching a fundamental understanding of AI, illustrating what AI can and can t do. Readers build on the fundamentals to learn about the ethical and operational risks inherent in using AI technology, principles which are then grounded in concrete tools and practical step-by-step guides to manage risk. The text is supported with published research, realistic scenarios, and real-life examples to illustrate how the theory is applied in practice. The goal of this text is to take readers from AI-curious to AI-confident, empowered to ask critical questions, advocate for their needs, and adopt AI technology responsibly and effectively. This book stands apart from others in the field by focusing not only on what AI can do in veterinary medicine, but on how it should be used. Where most literature either oversimplifies or overwhelms, this text offers practical guidance alongside the theory. It speaks with the voice of working veterinarians who understand the realities of practice, the pressures of clinical decision-making and the risks of introducing tools that are not yet well-regulated or widely understood. Didactically structured and enriched with practical worksheets, a glossary and review questions, this guide is an indispensable companion for both professional practice and learning.

Screw Algebra and Geometric Kinematics
Screw Algebra and Geometric Kinematics

This open access book bridging a long standing theoretical gap in kinematics, Screw Algebra and Geometric Kinematics delivers a comprehensive, modern algebraic framework that connects classical screw theory directly with Lie groups, Lie algebras and projective differential geometry. The monograph presents a rigorous, Lie theoretic synthesis of classical spatial mechanics and modern differential geometry. Bridging nineteenth century line geometry-from Mozzi, Chasles and Plücker to Ball, Klein and Clifford-with the intrinsic algebraic structures of SE(3) and its Lie algebra se(3), the book establishes a unified mathematical framework for Lie group methods, adjoint representations and dual vector spaces in mechanism theory. The book's text guides readers from the core Lie algebraic structure of screws and dual numbers to adjoint transformations, multidimensional null spaces, reciprocity theorems and Lie bracket formulations of kinematic constraints. It demonstrates how these advanced Lie theoretic principles directly translate into practical mechanism design, providing closed form mathematical tools for singularity analysis, posture manifold characterization, workspace boundary topology and the mobility analysis of metamorphic and origami inspired reconfigurable mechanisms. Tailored for researchers, graduate students and mathematicians in robotics and theoretical kinematics, this volume serves as an authoritative reference on Lie theoretic spatial motion. The monograph will serve as a benchmark for kinematics scholars, robotics researchers and design theorists for years to come. Inhaltsverzeichnis Line Geometry.- Screw Algebra.- Rigid Body Transformation and Finite Screw Displacement.- Screw Transformation Matrix and Effect on Chasles Motion.- Reciprocity and Screw Systems.- Screw Algebra in One and Multi-dimensional Null Space.- Relationship Between a Screw System and Its Reciprocal System.- Screw Systems in Constraints.- Screw Systems and Stiffness and Compliance.- Screw System Presence in Spatial Mechanisms.- Screw System Relation in Parallel Mechanisms.- Reciprocity-Induced Screw Systems in Multifingered Robot Hands.
