How much disruption can your system absorb before it stops doing its job? Few organizations can answer that question with a number, and many have quietly stopped expecting to. This book argues that they should expect to, and shows how. Trump and Linkov draw together the working tools of resilience science, from structured expert judgment and capability scorecards to network models, dynamic simulation, and decision analysis, into a single methodology that scales to an organization s stakes and budget. Readers learn to describe a system the way disruptions actually experience it, across its equipment, its data, its people, and its relationships; to find the weak points whose failure spreads; and to compare competing investments in units a budget meeting can argue about. The book is equally candid about the numbers themselves, showing where resilience metrics deserve trust, where they mislead, and how to tell the difference. For readers who encountered the case for resilience in The Science and Practice of Resilience, this volume carries the idea into daily analytical practice. Risk analysts, infrastructure engineers, emergency managers, resilience planners, supply chain and cybersecurity professionals, defense and national security analysts, and public policy officials responsible for critical systems will find this an ideal resource. Inhaltsverzeichnis Foundational Shifts Towards Practical Applications.- The Imperative for Implementable Resilience.- Resilience in Context.- The Anatomy of Resilient Systems.- Layers Scales and Governance.- Designing a Resilience Assessment.- Qualitative and Metrics Based Methods.- Computational Methods and Model Based Resilience.- Qualitative Assessment Framing the Resilience Problem.- Metrics Based Assessment Quantifying the Resilience Profile.- Model Based Assessment Stress Testing Through Dynamic Simulation.- Making Decisions With Resilience Analysis.- Where Resilience Analytics Goes from Here. He also holds an adjunct appointment at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and is President of the Society for Risk Analysis. His work examines how governments, organizations, and societies make consequential decisions under deep uncertainty, with particular emphasis on systemic risk, critical infrastructure, emerging and dual-use technologies, AI-biotechnology convergence, biosecurity, and resilience analysis. Before joining NC State in 2026, Dr. Trump spent six years at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, where he served as a Senior Research Social Scientist and founded the Center for Health Engineering. During the COVID-19 emergency, he served for 735 consecutive days in service to FEMA Region I as a strategic planner. This timely work is a comprehensive, approachable, and practical textbook designed to guide veterinary practitioners, students and industry leaders through the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Veterinary professionals are standing at the precipice of a technological transformation. AI is no longer a futuristic concept; it is an active player in clinical workflows, diagnostics, research and communication. And yet, most veterinarians are unprepared to assess or responsibly implement this technology. This book is written to change that. It begins by teaching a fundamental understanding of AI, illustrating what AI can and can t do. Readers build on the fundamentals to learn about the ethical and operational risks inherent in using AI technology, principles which are then grounded in concrete tools and practical step-by-step guides to manage risk. The text is supported with published research, realistic scenarios, and real-life examples to illustrate how the theory is applied in practice. The goal of this text is to take readers from AI-curious to AI-confident, empowered to ask critical questions, advocate for their needs, and adopt AI technology responsibly and effectively. This book stands apart from others in the field by focusing not only on what AI can do in veterinary medicine, but on how it should be used. Where most literature either oversimplifies or overwhelms, this text offers practical guidance alongside the theory. It speaks with the voice of working veterinarians who understand the realities of practice, the pressures of clinical decision-making and the risks of introducing tools that are not yet well-regulated or widely understood. Didactically structured and enriched with practical worksheets, a glossary and review questions, this guide is an indispensable companion for both professional practice and learning.
