Environmental Impact of Contaminants in Aquatic Systems

Produktinformationen "Environmental Impact of Contaminants in Aquatic Systems"

This book provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of aquatic contaminants, emphasizing the environmental behavior, toxicological effects, and remediation strategies for heavy metals and related pollutants. It explores key topics such as contaminant sources and pathways, environmental chemistry, and pollutant dynamics within aquatic systems. The book also delves into the classification of contaminants, including organic compounds, emerging pollutants like microplastics and PFAS, and nutrient-based eutrophication, and examines their interactions in complex aquatic environments. Drawing on both theoretical frameworks and practical case studies, this volume highlights cutting-edge monitoring tools and analytical techniques such as Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP-MS), and Remote Sensing (RS) with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These tools aid in the accurate assessment of contamination levels and help track pollutant dispersion in real time. A dedicated section focuses on the toxicological effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms and human populations, detailing both acute and chronic impacts, sub-lethal responses, and species- specific vulnerabilities. The book also presents diverse remediation approaches, ranging from physical and chemical methods to eco-friendly biological techniques like bioremediation and phytoremediation, complemented by discussions on water quality regulations, policy frameworks, and sustainable management practices. Designed for researchers, environmental scientists, educators, policymakers, and students, this book serves as a vital resource for understanding the multifaceted challenges of aquatic pollution. It promotes informed decision-making, community participation, and technological innovation toward healthier aquatic ecosystems and safer water resources.
